Traditional Software Development Project Management Problems and Prospects

Moin Uddin gave interview to Muntasir Rashid about Computers & Internet

1. Muntasir Rashid: How is going on?
Moin Uddin: Fine, busy with attending classes and some projects.
2. Muntasir Rashid: Can you tell us traditional software development project management procedure in brief?
Moin Uddin: Lots of software companies are growing now-a-days in Bangladesh. But, almost all of them are kind of cottages. They are not aware of standard of software development procedure. In most cases, only a single programmer is appointed for a project and a manager manages all on-going projects. And they don't use any tools for management and documentation. Still we don't have any company which has reached CMMI Level -2/3 yet.
3. Muntasir Rashid: What are major problems regarding traditional software development project management procedure?
Moin Uddin: Traditional software development which is maintained by most Bangladeshi companies cannot help to satisfy client and as well as the companies. Standards are not maintained. So, unpredictable system loses occurs. Delays helps clients to find out new requirements and urges of new requirements helps to lose tracks of changes and dismisses plans of development. Developers and client, both of them become unhappy. And this unhappiness making us lagged behind.
4. Muntasir Rashid: Is there any need of classification of the procedure depending on project size and purpose?
Moin Uddin: Yes, procedures varies based on project size, purpose and field. Lots of researchers have worked with software development processes. Companies can choose one of them, or make their own process by mixing two or three of them based on their needs. But, it is important to follow a process and continue following processes that chose to upgrade the company from cottage to an industry.
5. Muntasir Rashid: How do you see the idea of following a specific style where most of the software development projects are different from each other?
Moin Uddin: It's difficult to follow a specific process for every project. But, for most of the cases a specific company or a specific team of a company works on almost same type of projects. Better to customize a process as their need. And, they are free to skip some phases for some projects.
6. Muntasir Rashid: Many people say, traditional software development project management system makes the project timing lengthy?
Moin Uddin: Yes, I have already described the reason. A good project manager never allow a customer to make changes in the middle of development of the project. But, sometimes changing some portions becomes essential. For these reasons, a procedure to make changes should be developed by the manager to reduce delay.
7. Muntasir Rashid: Thank you for your valuable time. Do you have any suggestion for the new project managers?
Moin Uddin: You're very welcome. New project managers should try to start following a standard and keep continuity of this. This practice will be helpful to make a cottage industry to real software industry. Best of luck.
